We've started construction on one of Aotearoa New Zealand's largest solar farms - a big boost for the country 🌞 🌞 🌞
Ruakākā Solar Farm, near Whangārei, is a big deal for the country's electricity supply, because the more we can generate, the more we expect to see prices reduce.
Over its 35-year life span Ruakākā will be capable of producing up to 230GWh of electricity per year – that's enough to power around half the homes in Northland!
And thanks to the construction and rehabilitation of extensive wetlands, plans to recycle and reuse panels at the end of their life, and having sheep grazing between the panels, it'll also be one of the country's most sustainable solar projects.
It's being built next to our big 100MW Ruakākā battery, which allows electricity to be stored for high demand periods and helps smooth out those peak periods in the mornings and evenings.
We're expecting the first electricity to be flowing from Ruakākā Solar Farm in late 2026 and the farm to be fully operational in early 2027. It's going to be a fantastic addition to our hydro power stations and wind farms through New Zealand. Sunny days!
