I got an undecorated version of the Ottoman Kalkan reproduction from Salahs Archery to do destructive testing on, and it didn't go quite the way I expected.
The shield took a lot of damage but did its job well, especially considering how light it is. I started with hits from blunt swords and a bit of sparring, then shot it with a modern crossbow (the Cold Steel Cheap Shot) and a medieval crossbow with different bolts. Finally I leaned full into the destructive test with swords, a spear, a war hammer, a flanged mace, and an axe.
Definitely goes to show the main drawback of strapped shields (compared to centergrip)...
