There are a lot of small but powerful things hidden inside DAX and Power BI, and in this video I walk through 3 such tricks that can genuinely improve the way your reports look and behave.
We cover:
• Dynamic format strings in DAX to go beyond default measure formatting
• A clever way to sort months without a month number column
• How to find max values by different granularities using iterator functions like MAXX
Along the way, I also talk about the caveats of each trick, because some of these are powerful but should still be used carefully.
If you work with Power BI, DAX, dynamic formatting, custom visuals, time intelligence, or iterator functions, this video will give you a few useful ideas you can start applying right away.

Stop typing quotes and brackets manually. In Power Query, just select text and press Shift + to instantly wrap it. Works for {} and [] too.

![This #PowerQuery Trick Helps You Catch Weird Data
Power Query has a small keyword called is, and it can be really helpful when you are working with messy or mixed data.
With the is keyword, you can quickly check whether a value is a number, text, list, table, record, or another type of object.
For example, you can write:
[Column] is number
And Power Query will return TRUE or FALSE depending on whether the value is actually a number.
This becomes useful when a column has different types of values, or when you want to check something before applying the next step in your query.
In this video, I’ll show you how the is keyword works in Power Query and how you can use it to make your queries more reliable.
You’ll learn:
- How the is keyword works in M
- How to check if a value is a number, text, list, or table
- How to use TRUE/FALSE checks in Power Query
- Why this is useful when working with mixed or messy data
A very small keyword, but definitely worth knowing if you work with Power Query.
