Unfortunately I had to sell my Bertram lathe, it was too large for my shop and too heavy for me to move around. I purchased a nice small South Bend 9A to replace it. Most of the work I do is small and I only wanted a small lathe in the first place. The SB lathe was missing a threading dial and a 3 Jaw chuck and I'm not too experienced with a 4 Jaw and need something fast to load stock, so a 3 is a necessity for me. This one came up for sale on Facebook Marketplace and I jumped on it, the Catalogue # is 1210-01705, which means it is a cast iron body. It looked great, but when I got it home, there was something wrong, we had no key to test it out when I purchased it.

I thought the black coating was dirt and dust and some surface rust all covered in some WD40, but I'm not so sure now, maybe someone Blued it? In any case, I wanted it to look like a normal chuck. After a full clean and de-rust with Evaporust, it still wasn't working like it should, so I mounted it to the lathe and found some Galling. It took a couple of hours of work to get this chuck working like it should. I'm pleased with the result, I think this will last me about a lifetime.
I still need a chuck key, but maybe I need to make one.

If you need a threading dial, please reach out to me by email: needitmakeit@gmail.com. The one in the video is something I designed based on photos from the original, but it does include some improvements Like a larger dial face and a hobbed style gear.
If you have a source for backplates, please let me know, my lathe has a 1 1/2 - 8 spindle thread. I'd prefer not to thread it myself until I am more experienced. The same goes for the key.
