Blanco State Park, Blanco (2015)
Back in 1933, a company of young men with the Civilian Conservation Corps showed up on a stretch of the Blanco River with nothing but hand tools and eleven months to work. What they built still holds up today: stone dams, bridges, picnic pavilions, and a swimming area that remains one of the best ways to cool off in the Texas Hill Country.
Blanco State Park only covers about 105 acres and a mile of river, but it packs in enough to fill a full day. Wade into the calm water below the dam with the kids, paddle the deeper stretches, cast a line from the bank, or just find a spot on one of those original CCC built stone benches and watch the current go by.
It's proof that some of the best things in Texas don't need to be big. Just a little river, a lot of shade, and more than eighty years of history built to last.
