A tragic fire has swept through several villages in Kota Kinabalu, destroying around 200 homes and claiming the lives of three young children.

Firefighters recovered the body of eight-year-old Norfadilah Mohd Thajia during search operations this morning.

Her body was discovered near the remains of her two young cousins, who were found charred shortly after dawn.

Four-year-old Mohd Hasrul Abd and six-year-old Ana Abd had been reported missing alongside their cousin after the blaze broke out in the early hours.

Firefighters managed to bring the inferno under control just before half past six, preventing further spread across the dense settlement.

Investigators remain on the scene working to establish the cause of the disaster and assess the full extent of the damage.
