New Perspectives on Media and Education. A series of interviews with innovators and thought-leaders, hosted by Professor Ger Graus.

Eva Vonk and the creators and innovators gathered at Berlin-based collective TALES are rewriting the “rules” of storytelling.  Initially this work was based on Eva's experiences immersing herself amongst communities in the Congo Basin,  which became a book, a world-wide travelling exhibition and various multi-media projects that explored the myths and culture of the local people and related them to their eco-system. This was more than a story about an indigenous culture. It was in itself an education in how their relationship to the natural world affects us all - as the Congo has been described as the world’s “second lung” - and how their myths and cultural references are both unique and universal.

TALES is now bringing its approach to learning through shared storytelling to a worldwide audience using game-play as the route to connect with kids. It is in the forefront of new thinking about how education can work on screens, and how collaboration and co-creation can produce authentic and relevant content for all.

TALES OF US will be a multiplayer storytelling. game which emphasises collaboration as the way to win. It’s being developed by the TALES collective working in four diverse, inspiring locations in various parts of the world, and involving not only storytellers and digital creatives, but people versed in cultural understanding and the local environmental issues. Above all the project aims to maintain deep respect for the cultural rights of the communities they are revealing. The collective has explored not only the unique ways of life, storytelling and thinking of the local people, but also new ways to take responsibility for authentic and respectful storytelling, new ways of working in creative teams, and new ways to use limited funding to ensure the most effective results.

Eva Vonk's inspiring story of a girl who felt the education system created more barriers than opened doors, who learned despite film school that storytelling in the age of social media was more than just making movies, and that it could and should involve its subjects and audience in co-creation, is a valuable resource for everyone who cares about kids and learning, or wants to consider new ways of making content for the younger audience.

The CMC Thinking Differently season aims at nothing less than a radical re-think of the meaning and purpose of “education”. It will bring into sharp focus the need for greater collaboration between media makers and the learning sector, and deeper understanding of how children and young people are reacting to what's currently on offer.
