The thought behind this knot is that it was used by sailors to tie up their kit bags with this knot. The whole idea was that the Thief Knot was used to show if a bag had been tampered with. If a would be thief saw a bag sealed with a knot, he would probably assume that the bag was sealed with a Reef or Square Knot. Thereby when opened and resealed, he would mistakenly tie a Reef Knot rather than a Thief Knot.
