No one knows this year’s theme - forests and food - better than the Yellow-bellied Glider!
The threatened species' gliding distance is dependent on the height of trees in their habitat, with those in tall forests able to glide up to 140 m. This allows them to travel huge distances across their home range to access varied and dispersed food sources.
Family groups are highly territorial and will choose only their favourite trees to feed on and return to, sometimes for over 20 years. 🤯
With such specific needs, this species is dependent on tall, mature, open, and diverse eucalyptus forests for both food and shelter.
While there aren’t many connected patches of habitat like this left, our Waulinbakh Wildlife Sanctuary (NSW) is a vital site for the threatened species. Comprised of diverse eucalypt species and sheltered on three sides by more forests, the sanctuary is an important corridor for wildlife, including multiple glider species.
