How do people design an autonomous drone that can beat the most accomplished human racers? Push the drones as far as they’ll go.

Finding the edge of control is the only way these autonomous vision-based quadrators are able to fly faster than those controlled by humans. “If we had a successful run, we just cranked up the speed again,” say researcher Elia Kaufmann. “And we’d keep doing that until we crashed. Very often, our conditions for going home at the end of the day are either everything has worked, which never happens, or that all the drones are broken.”
