Yamato is the son of Kaidou. Born as Kaidou's daughter and groomed from a young age to be his heir, Yamato instead developed a profound admiration for the legendary samurai Kouzuki Oden. After Oden's death, Yamato decided to become like him, impersonating him and adopting his mannerisms. As a result of this desire to emulate Oden, Yamato decided to become a man and identify as Kaidou's son, with his father and the Beasts Pirates referring to him as such as well. This path has put Yamato at odds with Kaidou, with much of his life being spent imprisoned on Onigashima. Yamato befriended Portgas D. Ace during his visit to Wano Country, and after learning of Ace's death waited for the arrival of his sworn brother, Monkey D. Luffy. Initially desiring to join Luffy's crew, Yamato ultimately decided to remain behind in Wano to help protect it from outside forces, though he still intends to join them in the future. Yamato is a major ally of the Straw Hats during the Wano Country Arc. He also is the central character from the Oni Child Yamato's Golden Harvest Surrogate Pilgrimage Cover Page serial. Funnily enough before she became the country’s main defender, she was originally born and set to be Wanos next ruler, as the current ruler Kaido, was her father. After she’d witnessed Odens execution, she'd find Odens diary and would read about his adventures after he left to sea. Instead of ruling the country, she’d be inspired by the man that Kaido hated and murdered, with her calling herself Oden as she was inspired by his actions. Kaido seeing this along with his daughter being a conqueror, would say that she can die. We’d see her despite being imprisoned for so long and would still have hope that maybe one day she could still go off on her own journey. She’d eventually meet Ace 16 years down the line, with him igniting more hope into her, but unfortunately she’d learn the news of his death. And throughout all this time until the Wano Arc she’d be trying to escape Kaido's grasp and fighting for her life against him. It’s confirmed by Kaido that he was in fact trying to kill his daughter as he believed she was denying her fate. Kaido is someone who believes one’s destiny is already set, with him believing he can become the next joyboy and pirate king, and after he passes his blood will take the mantle. This is important to note for later on when we get to her stalling against Kaido which a lot of people severely downplay. Anywho, this would mean even before the Wano arc Yamato is fighting a Yonko with killing intent and actually making him more powerful over the years, meaning she too would be getting more powerful. We also know her and Ace at least are equal base to base, and this Ace should be stronger than the one who forced even OldBeard to use his devil fruit. And we know a super weakened Ace somehow reacted to and clashed with admirals. Anyway, we’d see her chance for freedom finally comes with the arrival of Luffy, the brother of Ace that he mentioned back when they met, and once again being given that hope of freedom. Luffy as we know in Wano gets put on the same pedestal as Oden, which is why Yamato herself is so driven to help and protect Luffy. We’d see that she’d immediately help Luffy out in knocking down Ulti and she’d actually do more damage than Post Udon Gear 3 Luffy, we’d see her as well being able to easily defend herself against Luffy, and not have an issue with it. But also Yamatos best option in this case would be her fruit as if she uses advanced Haki then she’d be expending more energy, rather than just simply transforming and freezing this man instantly. I feel like this argument gets even sillier especially after we see her fight Kaido so we can just get into that now. Yamato after successfully protecting Momonosuke and he’d read Odens Voyage, Yamato would now do what she should’ve done long ago, and that was fight for Wano instead of attempting to run away. Yamato even before transforming would manage to clash with Kaido's haki but not to the point where they split the sky, and see that Kaido has the intent to kill. Whether you argue that Kaido got stronger or wasn't at his peak doesn't really matter as Kaido still is at least intending to put his daughter down after years of already trying to do so. I'm not saying Yamato scales to Kaido at 100% but what I am saying is that Kaido is definitely trying harder than at least against Law Kidd Zoro and Luffy. With his pirate crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy explores the Grand Line in search of the deceased King of the Pirates Gol D. Roger's ultimate treasure known as the "One Piece" in order to become the next King of the Pirates.
