For the Vezo people of Madagascar, once nomadic sailors who lived entirely by the rhythm of the sea, life is changing. Their pirogues, once symbols of freedom and adventure, now rest more often on the shore, used only in shallow waters. And with them, an entire way of life fades. What becomes of a sailor who no longer goes to sea?
The Vezo have always been fishermen. But today, the waters yield less and less. Where once they returned with nets full of fish, now overfishing and a growing population leave families struggling to feed themselves.
To survive, many Vezo have turned to seaweed farming—an activity introduced by outsiders as fishing became unsustainable. The seaweed is not for food but for trade, bringing in the money needed for rice, oil, and other essentials.
For the Vezo, this shift is more necessity than choice. Fishing defined their identity, their freedom, their very existence. Now, forced to adapt, they face a paradox: in giving up the sea, can they still remain the people of the sea?
