In the vast deserts of Morocco, life is inseparable from the animals that share the land. From the golden dunes to the rocky plains, men like Abdallah and his nephew Abbas carry on an ancient and dangerous tradition: hunting and handling venomous snakes. As members of the mystical Aïssaoua brotherhood, they are famed for their ability to tame the most feared reptiles—the majestic cobra that rises with its hood in warning, and the elusive horned viper, whose ocher skin blends perfectly with the desert sands. But mastery over these creatures comes at a cost, and some pay with their lives.
The bond between Moroccans and animals extends beyond survival. In Mhamid, in the country’s far southeast, the desert comes alive each year with the pounding hooves of dromedaries. Riders young and old compete in spirited races, a tradition rooted in the days when bringing camels back to camp was both a necessity and a celebration. Here, experience is passed down, as seasoned champions like Lahsen guide the next generation in the art of riding—preserving the deep connection between people, animals, and the unforgiving beauty of the desert.
