This Cartier watch has a very unusual feature. This is the Cartier Rotonde De Cartier Mysterious Hours I spotted while at Spring Street, Watchfinder’s new boutique in Soho, New York… and by now, you’ve probably noticed its unusual feature. Very mysteriously, somehow, the hour and minute hands are floating, suspended in a see-through sub dial. These floating hands are something of a tradition of Cartier’s, started by its mystery clocks, which were first introduced in 1912. But how does this mechanical mystery work? Well, this illusion of time telling is achieved with a combination of old magic and also by placing each hand on its own individual sapphire crystal disc, driven by the movement, the Calibre 9981 MC, which can be seen curving around the floating hands via the see-through case back. The dial features a concentric circle texture with Roman numerals on a metallic overlay, and it comes in a 42mm white gold case. This Cartier Rotonde De Cartier Mysterious Hours is discontinued and costs around $27,000.
