Old School RuneScape was built on a promise. That microtransactions of any form would never be added to the game. But just a few years later, Jagex tried to sell exclusive cosmetics through corporate promotions. Players voted overwhelmingly against them and the update never happened, but it turns out, we almost didn't have a choice. These cosmetics were going to be added to the game whether players liked it or not. Two of the game’s most loved developers stepped in to make sure that didn’t happen. Without them, the game would be very different today. This is the story of how Old School RuneScape's biggest promise was almost broken.
