The Maamtrasna murders took place in 1882 when five members of the Joyce family were brutally killed. The crime shocked the nation and led to the arrest of several local Irish-speaking men. Trials were conducted in English, which many defendants didn’t understand. Patrick Joyce was convicted and executed, while others received life sentences. In 2018, the Irish government posthumously pardoned Myles Joyce, one of the men wrongly hanged for the murders.
