In 1931, psychologist Winthrop Kellogg conducted an experiment raising his infant son Donald alongside a chimpanzee named Gua to study nature versus nurture in human and animal development. Both were treated identically—fed, clothed, and taught together—to compare their learning and behavior. Initially, Gua outperformed Donald in motor skills and understanding commands, but she never developed human-like speech. Over time, Donald began imitating Gua’s vocalizations instead of learning language normally. Concerned about his son’s development, Kellogg ended the experiment after nine months. The study highlighted both similarities and clear cognitive and linguistic differences between humans and apes, raising enduring ethical and scientific questions about cross-species research.
