One of the most useful prebiotic fibres I use in clinic is also one of the least talked about.
Many people I work with have already tried inulin, resistant starches, or another of the latest microbiome blends. For a healthy gut these blends and stronger single prebiotic interventions can help but for people with chronic digestive issues this approach often backfires leading to more gas, bloating, abdominal pain and altered bowel movements.
When I'm working with someone who has IBS, SIBO, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, or a highly reactive digestive system, I often start with Partially Hydrolysed Guar Gum (PHGG).
It's a low FODMAP, soluble prebiotic fibre that is generally well tolerated, supports beneficial gut bacteria, and can help improve both constipation and diarrhoea.
The biggest mistake I see is people assuming they need the strongest prebiotic they can find or the most diverse blend of fibres to start with. Go low, go slow and build on improvements first!
