Common stool tests from the doctor tell you what’s there, and really not that much to be honest. Functional stool testing tells you whats there and also what they're doing too.
You can have “normal” bacteria on paper and still have poor digestion, inflammation, and symptoms that don’t make sense. What matters is function, not just presence.
Functional stool testing looks at:
– Enzyme output (are you actually breaking food down?)
– Fat digestion (bile flow issues show up here fast)
– Inflammation markers (calprotectin, secretory IgA)
– Microbial balance and overgrowth patterns
– Short-chain fatty acids like butyrate (are you feeding the gut lining properly?)
