We know early Neanderthals were in Britain about 300,000 years ago thanks to the discovery of the skull of a young woman from Swanscombe, Kent. They returned to Britain many times between then and 50,000 years ago, and perhaps even later.But that is not the only find for the English, as many as four different species of hominids have lived in England, starting 800,000 years ago. So, here are five of England’s most important human evolution discoveries according to the Smithsonian.
1. Happisburgh(~780,000 years ago): This site, about a three-hour drive northeast of London, contains England’s earliest evidence of hominids. In 2010, archaeologists announced in the journal Nature that they had found flaked stone tools dating to between 990,000 and 780,000 years ago, when Great Britain was connected to mainland Europe. Another find were the footprints left by five prehistoric humans between 850,000 and 950,000 years ago. These have been discovered on a beach in Norfolk, UK – the oldest such prints found outside Africa.
The footprints came to light on the shoreline at Happisburgh in May, 2014 after severe storm erosion wore away cliffs above. Of 49 footprints visible, 12 were analysed in detail. Within two weeks, the prints had been washed away by the sea – but not before a research team carefully recorded them by merging multiple digital photographs of each print to create high-precision 3D images.Scientist say that these hominids might have been members of the lesser-known species Homo antecessor.
2. Pakefield (700,000 years ago): Late in 2001, Durbidge and Mutch hit the jackpot: during an excavation in Pakefield, they found a small flint flake. To the uninitiated, it's just a chip of stone, the sort of thing you might prise out of your sandal. But the two friends Durbidge and Mutch saw it for what it was: a diamond amid dross. That little chip of flint had been shaped by the hand of one of the very first Europeans.These tools were about 7,00,000 years old.
