We have described the genus homo and then moved to Ardipithecus and Australopithecus. Now it’s time we start describing a new genus and that is of the paranthropines. The first species in this genus that we are going to talk about is Paranthropus aethiopicus. This species is thought to have descended from Australopithecus afarensis and therefore some call it by the name Australopithecus aethiopicus.
This species was originally proposed in 1967 by a team of French paleontologists to describe a toothless partial mandible that was thought to differ enough from the mandibles of the early human species known at that time. The fossils were discovered by Yves Coppens and Camille Arambourg in the Shungura deposits at the site of Omo in southern Ethiopia and they initially assigned them to a new genus and species, Paraustralopithecus aethiopicus.
