For both an efficient and effective video, you must follow three distinct stages. These are very straightforward, but knowing them will ensure that your budget remains slim and that your video will ultimately advance your mission.
These stages are called preproduction, production, and post production. They are defined by when the camera actually rolls – pre is before, production is the shoot itself, and post is after the shoot.
Preproduction is, hands-down, the most important of the three. This is where you craft the goal of your outreach and write out the video plan that will accomplish that goal. Who is your audience? Who will speak on camera? Where are you filming? You should emerge from this stage with a clear idea of how your video needs to unfold in order to accomplish your goal.
Production is the video shoot itself. This is the shortest stage and only lasts a day or two. It is also the most expensive because the most people are required for it. But, as long as you’ve done your preproduction work, you can minimize the expenses by efficiently filming everything you need – and nothing that you don’t. Changes to your plans are possible at this stage, but will add to your costs and are more risky.
Post production is when the editing happens. The footage you just captured is crafted into something effective and beautiful. There can be small revisions to how your video looks, switching out shots and things like that, but big changes are difficult, if not impossible, at this stage.
So pour the most time and attention into preproduction. Then the other two stages will be a breeze and your video will ultimately advance your mission.
