We spoke to Sigrid Dyekjaer, one of the producers of a new National Geographic documentary film The Territory.

This film, co-produced by the Uru-eu-wau-wau community, follows the vital, inspiring fight of the Uru-eu-wau-wau people of Brazil to defend their land from non-Indigenous farmers intent on colonising their protected territory in the Amazon rainforest. What makes the film even more remarkable is that, as the pandemic hit and the region was closed off to any outside visitors, including crew, what should have stopped filming, instead inspired the filmmakers and the Ure-eu-wau-wau to pick up the cameras themselves.

The result is a powerful, intimate view of this Indigenous community and the farmers who want their land- chronicling a conflict that has profound implications for the survival of a people and the planet.
