In 1996 pure-pop was dead in the water. Somewhat diluted versions of alternative rock and dance music dominated the charts. In the UK, Boy Bands like Take That and East 17 were the last vestiges of chart-pop’s once great kingdom, slowly being eroded by the Oasises and Blurs of Britpop. But then the Spice Girls barged their way in: a last hope and massive gamble. For the previous ten years, Bananarama and Eternal aside, girl groups didn’t sell. The accepted wisdom being that the main audience for chart-pop was little girls and they were only obsessed with boy bands. But kitschy, campy and fun compared to their straight-faced boy-band peers, the combination of Scary, Sporty, Baby, Posh, and Ginger were about to change everything. This is New British Canon and this is the story of “Wannabe.”

This video will be a slightly different format than usual. Blame Movies with Mikey and his Lessons Animation Taught Us series for that.
Animation teaches a lot. For many animation is a childs first introduction to cinema and teaches them key concepts that they will encounter throughout life. You learn a lot from the media you consume as a small child, and whether your lessons are beneficial or ruinous is based on what you are watching and what you can take from them. As such today, I will be talking about Beauty and the Beast and what my tiny self took from this film.
A lot of pre-Beast Disney perpetuates this idea that for every girl, one day their prince will come to save them. Whether they are Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty or The Little Mermaid, theres very little in the way of agency from the protagonists point of view. Beauty and the Beast flips this idea, so that Belle is saving the Beast. “Shes the one to break the spell”. But heres the thing, I was about five when I first watched this. I didnt get the fairytale script flipping because I had no previous frame of reference, I just absorbed the “love will triumph over all” concept and kept that as a standard to live by for way too long.
