Despite its influence, the timespan of Britpop was so very brief. From the release of “The Drowners” by Suede and “Popscene” by Blur, through Blur vs Oasis to its death knell with the release of OK Computer, merely 4 years and change. But the band that best represented that fleeting yet enduring cultural moment, the class divides, the classic pop literacy and the misfits-have-overrun-the-country attitude is Pulp. Formed in 1978, but finally with a chance at chart success in the Britpop era, the band, fronted by the awkwardly charismatic Jarvis Cocker, produced some of the most cuttingly insightful tracks of the 90s with “Do You Remember the First Time?”, “Mis-shapes” & “This Is Hardcore” But "Common People", their 1995 tale of class, sex and supermarkets, would define Britpop forever more. This is New British Canon and this is the story of “Common People.”

This video will be a slightly different format than usual. Blame Movies with Mikey and his Lessons Animation Taught Us series for that.
Animation teaches a lot. For many animation is a childs first introduction to cinema and teaches them key concepts that they will encounter throughout life. You learn a lot from the media you consume as a small child, and whether your lessons are beneficial or ruinous is based on what you are watching and what you can take from them. As such today, I will be talking about Beauty and the Beast and what my tiny self took from this film.
A lot of pre-Beast Disney perpetuates this idea that for every girl, one day their prince will come to save them. Whether they are Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty or The Little Mermaid, theres very little in the way of agency from the protagonists point of view. Beauty and the Beast flips this idea, so that Belle is saving the Beast. “Shes the one to break the spell”. But heres the thing, I was about five when I first watched this. I didnt get the fairytale script flipping because I had no previous frame of reference, I just absorbed the “love will triumph over all” concept and kept that as a standard to live by for way too long.
