A staple of western movies, by 1905, stagecoach holdups were nearly a thing of the past. But in some corners of the country, the Old West hung on. The stage route to Yosemite would get more than it's fair share of stagecoach robberies between 1886 and 1911, but one that took place a few miles north of Ahwahnee was unique. For the first time in history, an actual stagecoach robbery was caught on film.
Up until this point, every photo of a stage holdup was a reenactment, or created just for the camera. This was the real deal. Anton Veith took two photos as the stage he was on was being robbed, with only one coming out, and the photo would be featured across the country. No one had seen anything like it.
Holdups on the way to Yosemite from Raymond, California weren't exactly rare. Just a few years earlier, a bandit calling himself The Black Kid, made major news when he robbed a number of stages over two and half hours, including the U.S. Army.
In this video we journey the old stage route, taking a look at what's left of some of the old stops, and talk about the robbery that led to one remarkable photograph.
