On February 17, 1865, Chiricahua Apache warriors attacked a small United States Army fort in Southern Arizona. The Battle of Fort Buchanan is little remembered today, but it would go down as a the only time a United States Military Fort would fall in the decade long war with the Chiricahua.

While the battle is largely forgotten today, and the nothing is left of the fort, there are still some reminders in Southern Arizona of the battle, including the two tallest mountains in the Santa Ritas.
