Many learners think the German ß is some bizarre spelling quirk, but it’s not arbitrary at all.
German uses ß to show long vowels or diphthongs before an unvoiced “s” sound.
Compare:
Fuß (long vowel)
Fluss (short vowel)
“Fus” (not a real word, but it shows how you'd pronounce it!)
Once you understand the pattern, ß vs. ss suddenly makes perfect sense.
