US Army Platoon Sergeant Jorge Otero Barreto cautiously leads his point element back through the sweltering Vietnamese jungle toward a small Communist-held village he’s hell-bent on taking. Yesterday’s attempt saw him hit by an RPG that almost took his leg off - but it’ll take more than that to stop him from trying again.

As the Americans take their positions, suddenly, they are caught in an intense hail of gunfire. Within seconds, their machine gunner goes down wounded; moments later, his assistant falls lifeless beside him.

Vastly outnumbered, Otero Barreto knows the rest of his men will end up the same way if they don’t get to safety fast. He gives the order to withdraw - but he doesn’t go with them. His eyes are fixed on the M60 machine gun, now unmanned.

His leg still throbbing with pain, he crawls past his fallen comrades toward the M60. It’s now one man against an entire army…
