Henry Tizard had to travel halfway across the world just to be in this room. Before him sat a group of stone-cold Americans, unwilling to join the British campaign against Hitler. It was up to Tizard to change their mind.
Across the Atlantic, the Luftwaffe was tearing London apart; thousands of fighters and bombers drenching the city in fire. Everyone knew they could not hold out forever.
Tizard was willing to offer Britain's most guarded military secrets in exchange for American aid, but the officials remained skeptical.
Tizard knew his mission was slipping away. He had no choice but to hand their hosts Britain’s top weapon.
Without another word, he pulled out a plain metal box and set it on the table.
The moment the Americans opened, they could barely believe it. It was: (QUOTE) “the most valuable cargo ever brought to America’s shores”.
