They had laughed when they first saw John B. George’s mail-ordered rifle. It was the kind of gun you’d expect to see on a shooting range in Illinois, not on Guadalcanal, fighting against the Empire of the Rising Sun.
But now, as the dawn breaks over the cursed ridge he is trapped in, George can not afford to doubt his weapon.
A sound comes from above. Too deliberate to be the wind, and too close to ignore.
George raises the scope and sends three quick shots into the trees. The hill answers with a single word: “Banzai!”
