A cold cathode tube works by discharging a noble gas (such as neon or argon) into a glass tube. This light was recovered from an old scanner I purchased in the early 2000s and here's how it works:
1) Electronic inverter: The small inverter converts the 12V DC voltage into a much higher AC voltage, which is needed to trigger the discharge in the gas and this is important because the gas inside the tube requires a high voltage to ionize.
2) Gas ionization: When the gas is ionized, free electrons combine with atoms in the gas, releasing energy in the form of light. In Cold cathode tube, unlike hot cathode tubes, the electrodes do not need to be heated to emit electrons and this makes the system more efficient and suitable for operation at low temperatures.
