The most progressive forms of management are shifting away from top-down command-and-control toward treating the enterprise as an open, modular platform and living ecosystem.

However, a critical nuance is often missed: command-and-control has not disappeared; its focus has moved. Top-down management is shifting from directing day-to-day decisions to designing and governing the architecture, protocols, and interfaces through which the ecosystem operates.
