What is systems change and how do we make it happen?
In this 90 min seminar, we will be exploring what systems change is while also getting an overview of key methods and tools employed by individuals and organizations wishing to shift systems and enable transformation change. The event will include presentations and short workshops on the following methods:
Three horizons Model
The Three Horizon model provides structure to aid our thinking about how transition processes evolve by looking at the driving forces of innovation, the decline of incumbent systems, and the emergence of new patterns of organization.
Two loops model
The Two Loops model helps us think about the simultaneous growth and decay processes that are present in any transformation change process and how to best navigate these. As a whole describes two "loops." The first of these is used to represent the growth and subsequent decline of the existing incumbent systems. The second loop is used to represent the new emerging next generation of this system.
Multi-level perspective
The Multi-Level Perspective(MPL) is a prominent framework for describing transition processes in complex socio-technical systems. This model helps us to think about and map out how change happens on many different levels from the micro to the macro. It has been designed to help us analyze and better understand the “long-term, multi-dimensional and fundamental transformation processes through which established socio-technical systems shift to more sustainable modes of production and consumption.”
Leverage points
This section will give an overview of how to use leverage points for systems change. The idea of leverage points was introduced by Donella Meadows in a paper where she proposed a set of places to intervene in a system that would result in varying degrees of change within the overall organization. She started with the insight that there are levers or places within a complex system where a “small shift in one thing can produce big changes in everything.”
