Long before the pyramids, pharaohs, and hieroglyphs of Ancient Egypt, the Sahara was home to pastoralist communities who built stone monuments, buried cattle in ceremonial tombs, and may have aligned megaliths with the stars. In this video, I discuss the remarkable prehistoric site of Nabta Playa in Egypt's Western Desert. Dating back thousands of years before the rise of dynastic Egypt, Nabta Playa contains a stone circle, megalithic structures, cattle burials, and evidence for complex ritual activity during the Neolithic period.
Could some of the beliefs and traditions seen at Nabta Playa have influenced later Egyptian culture? Did these desert pastoralists help lay the foundations for ideas that would eventually appear in pharaonic Egypt? While we can't know for sure, the archaeology reveals a sophisticated communities who adapted well to changing desert conditions.
