A major indicator of a healthy spiritual environment is how leadership handles curiosity and scrutiny. Ask yourself: Are you allowed to ask for clarification, or are questions treated as rebellion?
Watch the Response if you research a teaching, find a discrepancy, and approach your leader:
Do they welcome the dialogue?
Do they get offended or defensive?
Do they shame you or call you out publicly?
The Warning Sign: An unwillingness to be questioned is a hallmark of spiritual abuse. A healthy leader welcomes a thoughtful student; a toxic leader demands a silent follower. If you do not have the freedom to ask "why" without fear of retribution, please ask yourself if this is truly a safe place for you (or anyone!).

![What is your relationship with boundaries?
Boundary setting is one of the most empowering tools for healing. Not only in how you share your resources, but also in your communication with others (think saying goodbye to exhaustive confessions and needing to get real with strangers). Learn more in our Rebuilding [After Religious Abuse] digital course – Registration opens April 25th for our first-ever Full Access version. This includes the option of joining our team for a live Q&A time to ask your questions and hear from others who are similarly healing. We wont be offering this again until 2026, so please dont wait!
