Messmer is an extremely difficult boss in Shadow of the Erdtree. I HIGHLY recommend equipping armor with fire mitigation, including the best shield you can manage to hold. Upgrade it so you dont lose as much stamina when blocking, and pay close attention to his delayed swings. He will drag the spear on the ground to freak you out, but dont dodge until you actually see it get close to you.
For phase 2, attack the snakes and keep swinging when Messmer is coming back up!
