In the 15th century, the Balkans became one of the main fronts in the struggle for power in Europe. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, the Ottoman Empire rapidly expanded under the leadership of Sultan Mehmed II. Serbia lost its independence, Bosnia was conquered, and many Balkan territories gradually came under Ottoman control as the empire sought to establish a strong presence in Southeastern Europe and open the way for further expansion westward.

This video explores the rise of Ottoman power in the Balkans and the moments when its advance faced fierce resistance. The Wallachian ruler Vlad III, known as Dracula, launched a campaign against the Ottoman forces and forced the sultan’s army into a difficult and exhausting war. Night attacks, scorched-earth tactics, and the famous Forest of Stakes near Târgoviște became symbols of the brutal struggle between frontier states and the expanding empire.

Although Ottoman authority eventually spread across most of the Balkans, these wars demonstrated that even smaller states could temporarily halt the advance of one of the most powerful military forces of the 15th century. The events of this era shaped the future of the region and became an important chapter in the long confrontation between the Ottoman Empire and the European powers.
