What do the REAL Little House on the Prairie and a Monkey Island have in common? They’re both hiding along the backroads of small-town Kansas.
Our adventure begins at the Little House on the Prairie Museum, where we visit the historic Kansas homestead that inspired Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved stories. Then it’s off to one of the most unexpected places in the American heartland - Independence’s Monkey Island. We uncover the remarkable story of the park’s famous space monkey, explore Monkey Island, Riverside Park, the Ralph Mitchell Zoo, Kiddieland, and a collection of wonderfully nostalgic attractions, including a surviving dinosaur from the 1964 New York World’s Fair. It’s also the place where I experienced something so unbelievable 21 years ago that, if I hadn’t lived it myself, I probably wouldn’t believe it. For the first time, I’m finally telling that story.
Before leaving Kansas, we make a quick stop in nearby Coffeyville to visit historic Death Alley, where the Dalton Gang’s infamous raid came to its violent end, and take a look at one of the Wild West’s most famous shootout locations.
From there, we reconnect with America’s Mother Road, stopping at the newly restored Blue Whale of Catoosa before arriving in Tulsa, where giant roadside icons welcome us back to Route 66 and the adventure continues.
