What questions are tugging at you right now, and how might exploring the answers to those questions help unlock your potential?
For the 30th installment of our popular Ask Me Anything series, Mike is joined by co-host Victoria Garrick Browne, a Forbes 30 Under 30 recipient, former Division I volleyball player at USC, mental health advocate, and founder of the nonprofit The Hidden Opponent. Victoria lived through performance anxiety and depression as an athlete and turned that experience into work that now supports student-athletes across the country, which makes her the ideal partner for the questions our community submitted.
Nearly every question leads back to identity. Mike and Victoria explore why the culture around us so easily hands young people a performance-based identity, what it looks like to move toward a purpose-based one, and why the way a parent talks about their child, even at the dinner table, shapes how that child sees themselves. They work through real scenarios: a 12-year-old melting down after a mistake, a counselor watching kids drift toward burnout, an athlete weighing whether to be open about anxiety during recruiting.
In this episode, you'll learn:
- How to help a young person build an identity beyond their sport
- Why the way you talk about your child is shaping their identity
- How to tell healthy competitiveness from unhealthy pressure
- The warning signs of burnout, and why competing too early can backfire
- How to share a mental health story without it becoming a liability
- Whether real confidence can exist without external validation
- The difference between formal instruction and guided discovery
- A simple, honest way to work with imposter syndrome
- Mastery isn't a finish line. It's trained, one honest question at a time.
This is a practical and useful conversation for anyone who competes, coaches, parents, or is simply trying to figure out who they are.
