Why do we keep chasing happiness in ways that don't actually work?

Dr. Laurie Santos, cognitive scientist, Yale professor, and host of The Happiness Lab, joins Dr. Michael Gervais for a conversation about what the science of wellbeing actually says about how to live a good life. Laurie created the most popular course in Yale's history on the science of well-being. In this episode, she explains why our brains are so reliably bad at predicting what will make us happy, and what we can do to change that.

Laurie opens with a striking data point: right now, more than 40% of college students say they're too depressed to function. More than 60% report overwhelming anxiety. She saw it firsthand, living with students at Yale, and it launched her on a mission to bring evidence-based wellbeing tools to as many people as possible.

This conversation goes well beyond the idea of "being positive." It's about understanding how your brain works: why it fixates on the comparisons that make you feel worse, why success doesn't deliver the lasting satisfaction you expect, and why the simplest behaviors (talking to a stranger, calling a friend, naming what you feel) are backed by some of the strongest research in psychology.

In this episode, you'll learn:

-Why getting rich, more successful, or more attractive won't make you as happy as you think
-How social comparison hijacks your satisfaction, and how to work with it
-Why introverts get just as much happiness from social connection as extroverts
-How your emotions are trying to tell you something, and what happens when you actually listen
-What three questions predict happiness at work better than salary or management quality
-Why happier companies outperform the S&P 500 (and what that means for leaders)

Everyone wants to live a good life. This is one of those rare conversations that might genuinely help you do it.
