When the moment arrives and you don’t have a script, are you trying to impress or working to connect?

Matt Abrahams, lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, host of the Think Fast, Talk Smart podcast, and author of Think Faster, Talk Smarter, joins Dr. Michael Gervais for a practical, deeply human conversation about how to stay clear, calm, and connected when you’re suddenly put on the spot. His way into this work starts when he was quite young… a last name starting with AB meant he was always called on first, long before he had any tools for the moment.

Matt makes the case that speaking in the moment is a skill you can train, not a talent you’re born with. He walks through what actually happens in the body when the spotlight hits, why the fix is to reframe threat as opportunity, and the two tools to reach for when your mind goes blank. Mike and Matt dig into structures for organizing a thought fast, the What, So What, Now What roadmap, and a listening practice called pace, space, grace.

The two also explore what’s known as the spotlight effect and why the attention you feel on yourself is mostly imagined, how to turn that spotlight toward the person you’re with, and the difference between preparing and training. Mike shares a vulnerable story about trying to breathe himself calm on stage before he had ever trained the skill, and together they land on being present and in service of connection as the big rock underneath it all.

In this episode, you’ll learn:
- How speaking in the moment is a trainable skill
- What actually happens in the body when you’re put on the spot
- How to reframe a threatening moment as an opportunity
- The two tools to use when your mind goes blank
- The What, So What, Now What structure for thinking fast
- Why great listening is pace, space, and grace
- How the spotlight effect works, and how to turn it off yourself
- The difference between preparing and training

Matt’s work is a reminder to all of us that the goal was never to sound perfect. It was always to connect.
