We often assume that if people know what scams look like, they’ll be better equipped to avoid them. But awareness alone isn’t enough. Scammers exploit predictable behavioural biases, using urgency, trust, emotion and convincing stories to prompt people to act before they stop to think. And AI is making this problem harder.
Generative AI can make scams more sophisticated, persuasive and scalable, while creating new opportunities for fraudsters to target people with highly convincing narratives.
Learn:
• Why awareness isn’t enough: How automatic, “System 1” thinking and behavioural biases can lead people to make risky decisions.
• How AI is changing scams: How generative AI can make fraudulent investment opportunities more convincing and increase their effectiveness.
• What can actually prevent harm: Evidence from research testing interventions which reduced people’s susceptibility to AI-enhanced investment scams.
• How to design for safer behaviour: Why prevention needs to go beyond telling people to “be careful”.
• How to break the stigma: Why talking openly about scams matters, particularly when shame or embarrassment can prevent people from reporting what happened.
