The mind is always offering a bargain: endure this moment and I will give you a better one.
Finish this task, reach this goal, get through this season, solve this problem, and then you can rest. Then
you can enjoy yourself. Then you can be whole. The details change, but the promise remains the same.
Next is the mind’s favorite hiding place because it can never be examined directly. The future is always
protected by distance. It can be imagined, feared, worshiped, and pursued, but it cannot be touched.
When the event finally arrives, it does not arrive as the future. It arrives as now—and by then the mind
has already created another next.
Have you noticed this?
You wait for the weekend, and when the weekend comes, the mind waits for the evening. You wait for
the vacation, and on vacation the mind plans the meal, the excursion, the photograph, or the return
home. You wait for the achievement, and almost as soon as it is reached, its pleasure fades into the
question of what must be achieved after it.
The future cannot satisfy the mind because the future never becomes an experience. Every experience is
present. Even the thing you have wanted for ten years, if it comes, can only be received now. Yet if you
have trained the mind to abandon now, you will abandon that moment too.
This is why the promise of next is so convincing and so empty. It keeps fulfillment close enough to
pursue but far enough away to preserve the seeker.
The seeker does not really want to arrive. Arrival would reveal that the one who was searching was itself
the distance.
