Concentrated wealth, stagnant wages, and austerity-driven policies have forced us to take on enormous debts to cover the costs of everything from healthcare to housing, education to transportation. This panel will consider how the growing crisis of personal debt relates to the contemporary economic situation – and look at the forms of organizing that seek to turn debt into a political and collective question.

Speakers
Astra Taylor is a writer, filmmaker, and co-founder of the Debt Collective.

Lindsey Muniak is an organizer with the Debt Collective, where she leads national efforts fighting medical debt and financialization in health care.

René Christian Moya is an organizer with the Debt Collective, where he fights against evictions and rent debt, and coordinates the Tenant Power Toolkit in California.

Moderated by Maddy Clifford (she/her). Maddy is a writer, musician and deputy press secretary with the Debt Collective, the nation’s first debtors’ union. She holds an MFA in poetry and spent almost a decade teaching creative writing classes to incarcerated youth. Her work covers topics ranging from Climate Justice to Abolition Feminism; she’s had the privilege of serving as Hip-Hop Diplomat in both Uganda and Argentina through the Next Level, USA program.
