Join us for a live stream of the memorial and teach-in honoring Tortuguita on the eve of the first anniversary of their murder.
New Yorkers will gather this Wednesday evening to remember Manuel “Tortuguita” Terán on the first anniversary of their killing by a Georgia SWAT team. Tortuguita had been part of a non-violent forest encampment against the proposed construction of "Cop City," a militarized police training center, when Georgia State Patrol troopers shot them inside their tent in the early morning of January 18, 2023. New York is one of thirty cities holding events to recognize the Day of the Forest Defender.
Tortuguita’s mother Belkis Terán, attorneys Devin Franklin and Steven Donzinger, and others will speak in remembrance of our fallen friend and comrade, followed by a march to a community garden vigil. Sponsored by the Metropolitan Anarchist Coordinating Council, Sane Energy Project, and Weelaunee Defense Society NYC, the event will be livestreamed by Haymarket Books. Attendees are encouraged to bring items of remembrance to leave at a temporary altar.
