The Plot of the Rue Saint-Nicaise was an assassination attempt against Napoleon Bonaparte on December 24, 1800, shortly after he had come to power as First Consul. As Napoleon traveled through Paris to attend an opera performance, royalist conspirators detonated a horse-drawn cart packed with explosives along the Rue Saint-Nicaise. Napoleon's carriage narrowly escaped the blast, but the explosion killed and injured dozens of civilians, making it one of the deadliest assassination attempts of the era.
