During the attack on Pearl Harbor, the USS Enterprise was at sea, returning to Oahu after delivering a squadron of Marine fighter aircraft to Wake Island. Originally scheduled to arrive back at Pearl Harbor on December 6, the carrier was delayed by rough weather, placing her about 200 miles west of Oahu when the Japanese strike began.
