In October 2001, shortly after the September 11 attacks, Operational Detachment Alpha 595 became one of the first American units inserted into Afghanistan to begin combat operations against the Taliban. Transported deep into the rugged Hindu Kush Mountains by modified MH-47 Chinook helicopters of the 160th SOAR, the team flew one of the longest combat helicopter infiltration missions in history. After landing behind enemy lines, ODA 595 would link up with the Northern Alliance, commanded by Abdul Rashid Dostum.
