My wife and I have committed to a life of adventure, exploration, and ultimately: the unknown. We tend to make our plans a few days in advance, and enjoy life on a 1 way ticket. We've seen some incredible highs, and some pretty rotten lows. Traveling foreign lands-- often against the media's recommendation-- we gain new perspective through new experience. Consistently 'just passing through', it can feel as if the only constant in our life is family.
With that in mind: it's been pretty great traveling with my parents for the past month. We are simultaneously learning many new things.
1) how to handle/maintain RV life
**in an RV we built from scratch
2) how to be parents
**raising a child on the road
3) how to keep growing our YouTube business
**with an infant in a bus conversion
the list goes on.
And so, great news: my dad is a retired mechanic who can handle and project. There have been more than a few issues with our rig since we've started using it, and my dad has the intuition to immediately get us on the right track, and the knowledge/smarts to find the easiest solution. Look no further than the air conditioning problem: at 75km/h the cold air suddenly switches from the vents to the windshield-- coming out of where you would put the defrost. It does this without me touching the dashboard at all. I figured the bus was possessed by some sort of ghost: one I could only hope was a benevolent prankster. Turns out it was a vacuum issue (sidenote: you measure vacuum in inches... unexpected) and in a few short hours: my a/c was fixed and good as new. Having my dad help us with 1) has been such a weight off our shoulders.
More great news: my mom is super-nana and always available to hangout with baby Jean as I am typically busy shooting and editing videos, hard at work trying to support my family, while Ivana is so often taking shots of whisky, smoking cigarettes, and stuck in a casino gambling (kidding.) My point is: we are busy people and my mom has really helped us with 2) -- meaning we are free to try and tackle 3) without outside stress.
The only bad news to report over the past 5 weeks of this family road trip is: our channel views are hecka low. We're not sure how much of this is because of the worst-it's-ever-been relationship of Canada and the U.S, politically. Or how much of it because the U.S is just a hard market to break into on YouTube, due to more competition? Either way, we're not too upset about our lack of views (and therefor $$$) recently, because we have been really, really, enjoying this trip!
Speaking of things we really enjoyed: introducing the San Antonio riverwalk. We arrived an hour before sunset, and stayed until about an hour after sunset, which appeared to be a great idea. We were all acting hecka silly (typical for us) and my dad even got in on the food vlog action! We enjoyed when the lights came on, after the sun went down, and baby Jean was being cute as heck (what else is new).
Life is good on the road. We chose this and don't regret it. It wouldn't be an adventure if there weren't rough patches. So, hopefully our views climb soon enough, but, in the meantime, at least we can make some great memories with family.
